First, let's address the misconception that these symptoms are harmless. Talk to anyone that has ever had a panic attack and they will tell you the increased heart rate, the rapid breathing, the fear of what is going on because you have no control over what is happening to you that it isn't harmless.

To help people that have never experienced a panic attack better understand what it is like, so that they can understand this isn't something to shrug off as nothing. I would like you to think of the last time you were so scared you wanted to cry... the last time you felt at a complete loss. Maybe it was when you turned around for a minute and when you turned back you found that your child had wandered away and you were frantically trying to find them.

Perhaps it was when you were driving down the road...at night... or in the rain or snow... and you started to slid at full speed into oncoming traffic, or into the concrete wall and you get control of the car just before you hit the wall or the car. Now multiple that by 10... that is what it is like to have a panic attack.

Here is a list of the most common side effects

  • Sweating
  • Rapid heart beat
  • Palpitations, feeling as though your heart is pounding
  • Intense feeling of impending doom
  • Shaking (visibly or feeling as if you were shaking)
  • Choking, feeling like there is a lump in your throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling as though you are being smothered or can't breath
  • Chest discomfort or pain
  • Dizziness or unsteadiness
  • Indigestion and abdominal discomforts
  • Bloating, nausea
  • Light headedness
  • Feelings of unrealness or dreamy sensations
  • Fear of losing control
  • Paresthesias in the body, extremities or body
  • Hot flashes
  • Chills
  • Blushing or blotches on skin
  • Urgent need to go to the bathroom

You may not experience every single symptom in a panic attack. You may have other weird symptoms or only a select few from the list.
