First, let's address the misconception that these symptoms are harmless. Talk to anyone that has ever had a panic attack and they will tell you the increased heart rate, the rapid breathing, the fear of what is going on because you have no control over what is happening to you that it isn't harmless.
To help people that have never experienced a panic attack better understand what it is like, so that they can understand this isn't something to shrug off as nothing. I would like you to think of the last time you were so scared you wanted to cry... the last time you felt at a complete loss. Maybe it was when you turned around for a minute and when you turned back you found that your child had wandered away and you were frantically trying to find them.
Perhaps it was when you were driving down the road...at night... or in the rain or snow... and you started to slid at full speed into oncoming traffic, or into the concrete wall and you get control of the car just before you hit the wall or the car. Now multiple that by 10... that is what it is like to have a panic attack.
